About BUMPS

A chance meeting at a tea party in Surrey in 1889 lead to one of the most affectionate, long-lasting, extraordinary garden partnerships of the 20th century.

Gertrude Jekyll, already a successful plantswoman, interior designer, painter, silversmith and embroiderer in her own right, met a young man, Edwin Lutyens, who had just left the office of architect Ernest George after one year to start his own practise. He was all of 19 years old. Miss Jekyll, twenty-five years his senior, not only commissioned her own house from him but introduced him to clients. She was to become his mentor, his partner and his lifelong friend.

BUMPS was his affectionate, special name for her. Even when Lutyens spread his wings as an architect, designing all over the world, he still commissioned planting plans from her, including those for the War Graves after World War I.

The action of the play takes place between 1889 and 1917. The play was given its premiere reading at the Garden Museum in 2001, and given then a production at the Kings Head, London. The play has been re-written as an audio play especially for this CD

Produced by Bella D’Arcy Reed, gardens and people, Autumn 2011.
Recorded at The Soundhouse Studios, Shepherds Bush, London where many Radio 4 plays and documentaries are , including Rumpole of the Bailey and The Reunion. CD and this flip book produced by Dubbs/Eyeframe, London
